Trucking Along
We've planted a couple of additions to garden now that we are pulling up some of the spring crops. Wednesday evening, we planted pumpkins where the snap peas used to be. They should be ready by October, just in time for Halloween! Today we also planted more beets, carrots, and bush beans, so that we can continue to harvest them throughout the summer. Yesterday we pulled up all of our broccoli (it was finally time to bid them farewell), and now we are researching and planning what to plant there next. I'm learning that farmers have to be very organized and thoughtful because we are already starting to think about where we are going to plant our fall crops!Unfortunately, we've had a couple of minor obstacles/worries the past few days. Some of our tomato plants got a fungus called Verticillium wilt, which caused their leaves to curl and wilt. We had to pull out about 10 plants so it wouldn't spread to the others. The survivors (and there are many because we planted almost 80 of them) are looking healthy and have some big green tomatoes on them. Whew! Also, we saw a telltale and foreboding sign today in the garden: a deer hoof-print. The fence around the garden is almost 10 feet high, so how did the deer get in? This weekend's project: research organic deer repellant.
