The Baptism
Yesterday was another big CSA day in two respects. First, we had four people join Michelle, Judith, and I in the garden as we harvested vegetables for the CSA and prepped beds for planting today. The garden was really popping! Thanks to all of our helpers, we did not have to stay out too long in the heat.Second, it was a big CSA week because of all the produce we harvested. It's a good thing too that we had so many people helping out because it would have taken forever for the three of us to pick, wash, bunch, and pack everything. This week's menu included the following: our first harvest of green beans, 2-3 large beets, carrots, Swiss chard, kale, a pick of three cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini, or patty pan squash, and, of course, more basil. I had to go out and buy another cooler to fit everything! Also, although we normally set up our CSA pick-up station outside of the Special Collections Library, thankfully the workers in Alderman Library let us set up our station inside. I love being outside, but yesterday, boy, was it hot!Speaking of hot, this morning too was another steamer. We planted two rows of summer squash, acorn squash, zucchini, and cucumbers where the cabbages used to be, and hopefully they will be alright in this heat.Today will go down in history for our garden not because it has been probably the hottest day of the summer so far, but because today we christened our shed. With cups of orange juice and sparkling grape juice, we toasted to our shed's longevity and excellent storage space. Three cheers for the shed!
