A few thank you's

Just last fall, our one-acre kitchen garden was a literal forest inside an 8-foot wire fence - the result of a garden once organically cultivated for John Kluge which had been allowed to lay fallow for nearly 15 years. To see the garden now, with its freshly tilled rows planted with vibrant green baby lettuces, broccoli, and cabbage, you would never know that it used to be home to 20 foot trees!Getting the garden back into shape took a lot of work, coordination, and funding from a number of generous individuals from the University community. Thanks to two grants from the UVA Parents Fund, we were provided funding for clearing the garden as well as purchasing all of our seeds, seedlings, and tools. Without the support of the Parents Fund, the Morven Kitchen Garden would most likely not exist at all!The success of the kitchen garden also would not have been possible without the generosity and cooperation from all of the programming and estate staff at Morven Farm. From day one, this team has been more than willing to help figure out the logistics of making this garden a reality, and we are excited to make this garden an outdoor classroom a crucial part of Morven's mission to promote forward-thinking, interdisciplinary learning and problem solving.A huge thank you also goes out to UVA Dining for donating 30 cubic yards of compost (thats a LOT) from Panorama Farm! You know what they say... "you gotta put a $.05 plant in a $5 dollar hole".
