The week ahead

Now that we have the first two quadrants planted and looking beautiful - it's time to move into the second half of the garden! The layout of the kitchen garden was carefully designed to have four quadrants (all 60ft by 80ft), which each have 10 rows, that are all 3ft wide. The quadrants are a useful way to split up our acre, as we plan to rotate throughout the seasons and try out some experiments in things like companion planting and season extension.

Our main goal for this week is to till up the 3rd quadrant (with the help of our rototiller steed, Hidalgo) and to plant corn, sunflowers, and various other melons and squashes that strike our fancy. You know the saying about corn - "knee high by July" - so lets hope we can get the seeds in the ground and have the corn up to our knees in a month!

Until then, we have 20 rows filled with broccoli, cabbage, kale, swiss chard, sugar snap peas, carrots, beets, radishes, beans, 10 different kinds of tomatoes (!), 4 varieties of peppers, eggplant, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, melons... oh my!
