putting the garden to bed
Thanks to Daylight Savings, we have been able to get back into the garden in the mornings to finish putting it "to bed" for the winter! All the extra morning sunlight and the amazing fall weather for the past few weeks has meant that the tasks on our to-do list are finally winding down for the season. After pulling out all the summer plants, the rows have been tilled (thanks to our trusty rototiller, Hidalgo) and planted with a cover crops of Red Clover and Hard Winter Wheat. Some of the rows are already popping up with little green shoots - a beautiful sight to see! We've also planted three different kinds of garlic - which will hibernate all winter, and will be bursting and ready to go into summer dishes come next June! It always amazes me how a little clove planted in November will become a whole head of garlic in 6 months...The last big task on our list is to break ground into the third quadrant, seed a cover crop, and start dreaming up a quadrant full of fruits, berries, and perennial plants to be planted in the spring. That's right, we're going to be bigger and better next season! The more work we do now to prep the soil, the happier our plants will be next year. So keep your fingers crossed that this fall weather keeps smiling upon us and we can start moving some dirt!PS - We are also in the process of building a much-improved, winter-proof chicken coop for our lovely egg-layers... photos to come later this week!
