This Week at the Garden: Greenhouse Makeover

Date: September 29, 2022

Blog Post by: Brookelyn Mitchell

One of MKG’s beloved greenhouses, home to primarily tomatoes and eggplants, received a ravishing makeover this week! The new renovations emphasize Morven’s values of sustainability, as our greenhouses extend the growing season into late fall and early spring which provides the community with local produce longer to avoid reliance on imported crops. With UVA’s goals to be carbon neutral by 2030, the implementation of this sustainable agricultural practice — among the many others at MKG — has been crucial in encouraging others at UVA as well as Charlottesville citizens to make more eco-conscious decisions that will lower carbon emissions all around.

Before Renovations

Established in 2015, the greenhouses were built with plywood which has aged due to weathering and utilization over time. This original plywood was replaced with scrap pieces of traditional greenhouse plastic that was leftover from the construction of our high tunnel this year which diverted what otherwise would have been excess waste. The new materials allow for more thermal protection and natural light, so now, crops can thrive in more durable and efficient conditions. The greenhouse makeover could not have been possible without all of our supporters, so thank you to each and every one of you!

After Renovations

MKG is ecstatic for all of the produce to be harvested from the greenhouse in the future, and we cannot wait to share its fruitions with our incredible community! To get a firsthand look at the new greenhouse infrastructure, sign up for one of our many Volunteer Days through our eventbrite page; you might just get to take home a snack from the renovated greenhouse!

See you around the garden! Brookelyn Mitchell, MKG Student Intern
